Tour Overview

Paddlers will enjoy this guided Vancouver Island kayaking journey to the islands outside Ucluelet Harbour and into Barkley Sound. At the start of the tour, the guide prepares everyone for a day of adventure. Kayaks are set up for each guest, and seats and foot pedals are adjusted. Lessons are given and safety concerns and procedures are explained.

Departing from the beach at our Majestic Ocean Kayaking Centre in Ucluelet, we will first explore the sights in the Ucluelet Harbour, including a variety of wildlife that frequent this area. We will then paddle out into Barkley Sound and experience the open Pacific Ocean. Your guide will point out some spectacular views of the rocky shores, gigantic kelp beds, and perhaps an ancient First Nations whaling beach. Colonies of sea lions, seals, a diverse array of intertidal life, and even whales may all be spotted on this day trip.

Your guide will lead the tour and is in charge of safety at all times. Guests having difficulty will receive extra assistance when required. We always travel as a group and stay close together. If there is a slow paddler we must wait for them, and strong paddlers must stay with the group.

After a couple of hours’ paddling in the morning, your guide will take you to one of the nearby sandy beaches to enjoy a delicious gourmet picnic lunch and a short rest, where we can check out some tidepools and take in the stunning scenery. Your tour will continue for another couple of hours in the afternoon, before returning to our kayaking beach for an estimated arrival time of 3:00pm.

** Because we venture into more exposed waters, guests can expect wind & swell on this tour. We will always allow the weather conditions to guide our decision making and should the sea conditions not prove optimal we will select a more protected route, making the most of the beauty & history of the Ucluelet Inlet.

Majestic Ocean Kayaking has been leading tours on the west coast of Vancouver Island since 1993. Our kayak guides are well-equipped, trained, and practiced in the use of a variety of safety equipment and procedures. We hold all the required permits set out by Parks Canada and BC Parks, and are always respectful of their guidelines for operation. Our guides are all experienced kayakers, highly qualified, and certified to the standards required by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of British Columbia, including current wilderness first aid certification. They are all experienced outdoors people who lead and participate in their own trips and adventures in the off season. They know the best areas to paddle, and also the tricks of our weather.

All of our guests will be given a demonstration of our equipment, a lesson on basic paddling strokes and skills, and an explanation of safety procedures. We provide our guests with all the necessary equipment to outfit a kayak safely, including a PFD, sprayskirt and pump. Your guide will lead the tour and is in charge of safety at all times. We travel as a group and always stay close together; any guests having difficulty paddling will receive extra assistance. Our guides are experienced at leading tours to suit both novice and experienced paddlers alike, ensuring that everyone will enjoy their tour.

Environmental Stewardship

At Majestic Ocean Kayaking, we take our role as environmental stewards seriously. We keep to established tent sites and trails, compost our food waste, and dispose of all garbage responsibly. We follow Leave-No-Trace principles in the backcountry, storing food out of reach of wildlife, and minimizing campfire impacts. We respect all wildlife that we encounter; keeping in mind that sightings are precious to our guests, but always maintaining a respectful and safe distance.

We are proud to support the work of local conservation and naturalist groups such as the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Tofino Shorebird Society, the Central West Coast Forest Society and the Wild Pacific Trail. We regularly get our hands dirty by organizing and participating in beach cleanups in the areas that we visit. We are also very proud of our role as educators. We enjoy sharing our knowledge of the natural and cultural histories of the areas we work in, while teaching our guests about minimum impact philosophies and practices that they can carry forward to use in their own lives and travels.

My husband and I did the Barkley Sound / Outside Waters tour (4.5 hr) and it was perfect even for me who had never kayaked before :) Tracy was super friendly and personable at check in and they were great at making sure we were outfitted appropriately. Definitely would recommend them and look forward to hopefully hitting the broken islands tour next year! Thanks again for everything!
