Tour Overview

The Broken Group Islands of Barkley Sound are located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They are an internationally renowned sea kayaking destination and part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Natural features of this beautiful archipelago of more than one hundred islands include lagoons, sandbars, blowholes, sea caves, arches, white sandy beaches and quiet coves.

Explore the intricate waterways of the inner islands by sea kayak, and experience the thrill of open ocean waves, swells and the towering cliffs of the outer islands. Enjoy beach combing, hiking and tide pool exploring – all adding to the fun and adventure of your trip.

Learn about the rich cultural history of the Broken Group Islands and visit the ancient middens, village fortifications, stone fish traps and archaeological sites in the traditional territory of the Tseshaht First Nation who have inhabited this area for thousands of years.

Tour Itinerary

Day prior: The evening before your tour we would like you to meet us at our kayaking base at 1167 Helen Road in Ucluelet. We will fit you for your paddling equipment, check that you have everything you need, give you dry bags to put your clothes in and offer packing advice. If you cannot make it to meet us,please be sure to call in the day before your departure to confirm your arrival and let us pass on any last minute information to you.

Day 1: We meet at 8:00 am at 1167 Helen Road in Ucluelet. Complimentary parking at Majestic Kayaking during your kayak trip. We travel together by boat to a sheltered beach in the Broken Group Islands, where we launch our kayaks for the trip. Here we unload our equipment and guide you through how to pack the kayaks. From the onset of our trip you will be well informed on how to use and care for the equipment. After an equipment orientation, there will be lessons to teach you the basic fundamentals of ocean kayaking as well as a safety talk before we set off to paddle the Broken Group Islands. We always travel as a group and stay close together, traveling at a moderate pace. Our arrival time at camp depends on the physical ability of the group and the weather conditions we experience. We will stop at a sandy beach for a gourmet picnic lunch and after a bit more exploring we will arrive at our camp. Your guides will help you locate an appropriate tenting spot and assist you in getting organized and settled. Sometimes we keep our camp in one location for the duration of the trip and do day trips from the site, other times we may choose to move the camp during the trip.

Day 2 and 3: After a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast we head off for our first full day of paddling. Your guides will choose the exact route and itinerary, making adjustments according to weather conditions and to suit the needs of the group. We try to organize our trips to satisfy both active adventurers and those looking for a relaxing vacation. We hope you will agree that we have found the right balance. After a few hours of exploring we will stop for lunch and a short rest before continuing with a couple more hours of paddling in the afternoon. In the evening you will have some time to read or relax while your guides prepare a delicious dinner. There will be an opportunity to gather around a campfire to share stories and get to know your paddling partners a little better.

Day 4: After taking down our camp and enjoying your last delicious breakfast, re-packing the kayaks, we begin the paddle to Secret Beach at Toquaht Bay, with lunch along the way, we plan to arrive around 3:00 pm. Our van and trailer will be there to shuttle you to Ucluelet and the Majestic Kayaking base.

Our arrival time is meant to allow time to travel to Nanaimo to board a ferry to mainland British Columbia, or continue on to other Vancouver Island destinations. Please be advised that there is the possibility that weather or other conditions could delay our return time, so plan accordingly.

Suitability

This is a moderate grade trip.

No kayak experience is necessary; participants must be comfortable in water and in good enough shape for 4 to 6 hours of daily kayaking and some easy hiking.

Clayoquot Sound

4 Day / 6 Day Kayaking + Camping: $1,199 to $1,799 per person

Tour Overview

Paddle through the open waters of beautiful Clayoquot Sound, with its long white sandy beaches, past some of the last remaining old growth temperate rainforests on the many islands of Clayoquot Sound; traditional territory of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. Intermediate to experienced paddlers will enjoy the challenge of the surf and swell.

Orcas, grey and humpback whales, wolves, black bears, salmon, eagles and many unique shorebirds thrive here. Low tides expose a rich variety of intertidal creatures, allowing us a glimpse inside the life of the vast Pacific Ocean.

Explore the shorebird filled mudflats around Grice Bay, the old growth forest of Meares Island, the activity of Tofino Harbour, and the open coastlines of Wickaninnish Island and Vargas Island, depending on your group and sea conditions.

4 Day Tour Itinerary

After equipment orientation, lessons to teach the basic fundamentals of ocean kayaking, and a safety talk, we begin paddling to Wickaninnish Island and into the wild and wide Clayoquot Sound. We always paddle as a group and stay close together, traveling at a moderate pace. Our arrival time at the campsite for the first night depends on the physical ability of the group and the weather conditions we experience. We will stop at a nearby sandy beach for a gourmet picnic lunch and upon arrival at our first nights camp your guides will help you to locate an appropriate tenting spot and help you get organized and settled. Sometimes we keep our camp in one location for the duration of the trip and do day trips from the site, other times we may choose to move the camp throughout the trip.

Day 2 and 3: After a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast we head off for a full day of paddling. Your guides will choose the exact route and itinerary, making adjustments according to weather conditions and to suit the needs of the group. We try to organize our trips to satisfy both active adventurers and those looking for a relaxing vacation. We hope you will agree that we have found the right balance. After a few hours of exploring we will stop for lunch and a short rest before continuing with a couple more hours of paddling in the afternoon. There will be an opportunity to sit around a camp fire to share stories and get to know your paddling partners a little better.

Day 4: After taking down camp, eating one last filling breakfast breakfast and re-packing the kayaks, we begin our paddle back to Tofino. We plan to arrive back in Tofino around 3:00pm to be back in Ucluelet by 5:00pm. This allows time to travel to Nanaimo to board a ferry to mainland British Columbia, or continue on to other Vancouver Island destinations. Please be advised that there is the possibility that weather or other conditions could delay our return time, so please plan accordingly.

6 Day Tour Itinerary

If we can have everyone prepared for the tour the morning departure will go quickly.

We travel together by passenger van to Tofino, which is where we launch our kayaks for the trip to Clayoquot Sound (you can drive your own vehicle if you prefer). Here we unload our equipment and guide you through packing the kayaks. From the onset of our trip you will be well informed on how to use and care for the equipment. We will stop at a nearby sandy beach for a gourmet picnic lunch and upon arrival at our first nights camp your guides will help you to locate a good tenting spot and help you get organized and settled. Sometimes we keep our camp in one location for the duration of the trip and do day-trips from the site, other times we may choose to move the camp during the trip so that you can experience more of the area.

Day 2-5: After a good nights sleep and hearty breakfast we head off for our first full day of paddling. Our guides will choose the exact route and itinerary, making adjustments according to weather conditions and to suit the needs of the group. We try to organize our trips to satisfy both active adventurers and those looking for a relaxing vacation. We hope you’ll agree we’ve found the right balance. After a few hours of exploring we will stop for lunch and a short rest before continuing with a couple more hours of paddling in the afternoon. There will then be the opportunity to gathering around a camp fire to share stories and get to know your paddling partners a little better.

Day 6: After taking down our camp, another good breakfast and re-packing the kayaks, we begin our paddle back to Tofino. We plan to arrive back in Tofino at around 3:00pm and Ucluelet by 5:00pm. This allows time to travel to Nanaimo to board a ferry to mainland British Columbia, or continue on to other Vancouver Island destinations. Please be advised that there is the possibility that weather or other conditions could delay our return time, so please plan accordingly.

Friday – Monday.  Spend four days exploring the tiny islands, channels, arches and sea caves of the Broken Group Islands; an internationally renowned sea kayaking destination and part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.  Natural features of this beautiful archipelago include lagoons, sandbars, blowholes, sea caves, arches, white sandy beaches and quiet coves. Learn about the rich cultural history of the Broken Group Islands and visit the ancient middens, village fortifications, stone fishtraps and archaeological sites in the traditional territory of the Tseshaht First Nation who have inhabited this area for thousands of years.

Tuesday – Friday. Clayoquot Sound, one of BC’s Provincial Parks, is a vast and beautiful area with rare old growth temperate rainforests, and the traditional territory of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. Unesco Biosphere Reserve.

After gaining experience over the last few days paddlers will now enjoy the challenge of outer coast paddling. Orca, gray and humpback whales, wolves, black bears, salmon, eagles and many interesting shorebirds thrive here and low tides expose a rich variety of intertidal life. An unforgettable experience awaits you in this area rich with history and full of life.

Day 1: We meet at 8:00 am at 1167 Helen Road in Ucluelet. (We offer free parking at the Majestic Kayaking base in Ucluelet). We travel together by boat to the Pacific Rim National Park which is where we launch our kayaks for the trip through the Broken Group Islands. Here we unload our equipment and guide you through packing the kayaks. From the onset of our trip, you will be well informed on how to use and care for the equipment. After an equipment orientation, lessons to teach the basic fundamentals of ocean kayaking and a safety talk, we begin paddling to the Broken Group Islands. We travel as a group and stay close together, paddling at a moderate pace. Our arrival time in the Broken Group depends on the physical ability of the group and the weather conditions we experience. We will stop at a nearby sandy beach for a gourmet picnic lunch and upon arrival in the Broken Group Islands, we will set up our camp. Your guides will help you to locate a good tenting spot and help you get organised and settled. Sometimes we keep our camp in one location for the duration of the trip and do day trips from the site. Other times, we may choose to move the camp during the trip.

Day 2-3: After a good nights sleep and hearty breakfast we head off for our full days of paddling. Your guides will choose the exact route and itinerary, making adjustments according to weather conditions and to suit the needs of the group. We try to organize our trips to satisfy both active adventurers and those looking for a relaxing vacation. We hope you’ll agree we’ve found the right balance. After a few hours of exploring we will stop for lunch and a short rest before continuing with a couple more hours of paddling in the afternoon. Day 4: Today we pack up camp, and paddle back to Ucluelet and stay overnight in town. Over the past 4 days you have gained experience and can now take the next step and paddle Clayoquot Sound.

Day 5: We meet at 8:30 am at 1167 Helen Road in Ucluelet. We travel together by comfortable passenger van to Tofino with our trailer load of kayaks. On a long sandy beach, with the most spectacular scenery, we launch our kayaks for the trip into Clayoquot Sound. After a short paddle we will stop for lunch and make plans about our destination for camping for the night. Sometimes we keep our camp in one location for the duration of the trip and do day-trips from the site, other times we may choose to move the camp during the trip so that you can experience more of the area.

Day 6-7: After a good nights sleep in our new home, and hearty breakfast, we head off for our first full day of paddling in Clayoquot Sound. Our guides will choose the exact route and itinerary, making adjustments according to weather conditions and to suit the needs of the group.

Day 8: After taking down our camp, another good breakfast and re-packing the kayaks, we begin our paddle back to Tofino. We plan to arrive back in Tofino at around 3:00pm and Ucluelet by 5:00pm. This allows time to travel to Nanaimo to board a ferry to mainland British Columbia, or continue on to other Vancouver Island destinations. Please be advised that there is the possibility that weather or other conditions could delay our return time, so please plan accordingly.

The Broken Islands offer some sheltered padding and is suitable for novice paddlers, this will get you ready for the next tour where there will be some open water paddling, waves and swell in Clayoquot Sound.
