Moderate temperatures make Ucluelet an ideal travel destination year round. Moderate temperatures and high precipitation result in a lush temperate rainforest and freedom from extreme temperature changes so common in other parts of Canada.

Activities like hiking, surfing and beach combing can be enjoyed year round. In the spring and summer provided calmer marine weather for ocean-based activities like sport fishing, kayaking, whale and wildlife viewing.

During the summer months a ridge of high pressure develops near the coast and controls the direction and strength of the coastal winds. As a result, the frontal systems which approach the BC coast are much weaker and any storms that occur are not as intense. The prevailing winds during the summer months are from the northwest. In winter, Ucluelet is an extraordinary place for Vancouver Island storm watching. To the west, Arctic and subtropical air masses collide over the Pacific Ocean bringing as many as 15 storms per month to the west coast during winter.

Weather plays an important role for kayakers along the British Columbia Coast. Weather changes are often sudden and can represent a hazard to those even with considerable experience.

Forecasts and warnings for all British Columbia’s coastal waters are issued by marine meteorologists at the Pacific Weather Centre in Vancouver. Recent technology such as satellite imagery, automated coastal weather stations, weather buoys and computer data gathering and forecasting systems are all valuable tools used by the marine forecasters who describe the expected weather conditions in all their variety. It is the task of your guide to interpret the weather forecasts and consider the local knowledge they have gained from years of experience.
